Which is the best season of the Ultimate Fighter?

Curious George asked:

I love MMA and the UFC, but I don’t get Spike, so I’ve never had the pleasure of watching this show. I’m considering purchasing a season on DVD, so I’m wondering which one is considered to be the best.

Honestly, the first season of that show changed my perception of MMA. I was initially drawn to the sport because of it’s violence; it was little more than a spectacle for me, but after watching the show and seeing how these fighters lived, trained, and treated each other inside and outside of the cage, I really fell in love. It’s a sport like no other and it’s far more than just a spectacle.

If you’ve never seen the show before you’ve got to start with season one. Season two was also amazing. Really things started going downhill around season five, but picked up with an absolutely amazing season nine. One, two, or nine will break you in quite nicely.

Season 1- had the best fighters since the show was new. They had ridiculous and pointless challenges. A fighter is kicked off the show before he fights. Willa Ford serves what purpose?

Season 2- they had a good crop of fighters. But, they didn’t have a format to the tournament, Rashad fought more than he should of.

Season 3- Team Dagger, Tito v. Ken, decent fighters and fights

Season 4- The comeback- UFC vets fight, Serra, Cote, Lutter, Shonie, Clementi, Sell

Season 5- Very good talent- Diaz, Maynard, Manny, Lauzon, Wiman, Miller, crazy Corey Hill

Season 6- Not much talent, kinda boring, Mac Danzig, the winner almost out of the UFC with three straight losses

Season 7- Amir won, got crushed in his first real UFC bout, CB is doing ok, Jesse Taylor is doing ok outside the UFC, Credeur is doing well

Season 8- Bader, Efrain, crazy Junie, Al Stanky as a Mickey boxing coach, Lawlor, Krystof, Marshall

Season 9- Pearson and Winner look to be pretty good in the UFC, the rest of the cast, not so much

ill go w/ season 1. not only were there good fighters on the show, it had good drama. koscheck and southworth vs.leben, hoger acting like a politician and playing both sides, thacker getting a real bad case of ‘do i really want to be there?’ and dana’s first ‘do u wanna be a fuckin fighter?!?!’ speech, etc.

i know its all reality tv, but actually those situations seemed as real as possible. mainly b/c they stepped on something but didnt know whether it was dog shit or a tripwire. the other seasons, they already knew what to expect and it seemed like a lot of it afterwards was just for show. ill admit, i did find junie entertaining in the later seasons…but much of it is just re-hashed stuff.

plus, thereve been so many seasons of TUF, u can barely remember who was on the show nowadays.

The first, and I think second season had the most talent, but unfortunately they had some stupid challenges along the way that kind of takes away from things. I think the first three, maybe four seasons helped you to get to know the fighters better. In fact, there was hardly any focus on the coaches for the first two seasons. I liked the fifth season because they had some pretty competitive fights, and plus I’m a Pulver fan (Jens Pulver and BJ Penn were the coaches). The Mir-Nogueira season (nine, maybe?) was OK, too.

I guess I’d suggest 1,2, and 5 for starters, then 4, 3, and 9 as a follow-up (in that order) if you want to continue.
