if you are 16, 5′9, and 120 lbs, i have bad news. You’re a runt. Sorry, its just the truth. If you want to keep reading, however, i can provide many many tips and facts to help you strengthen your body. First things first, Stop Smoking. Right now. Just Stop. Smoking in every conceivable way is harmful to a workout routine. it destroys healthy tissue, weakens your heart, kills your lungs, and generally makes you Not cool. So again. Stop.

So, now thats covered, we’ll turn to diet. Diet, believe it or not, is pretty simple. You are 16, which complicates things a bit, but bear with me while i explain what you are doing, why its wrong, or unnecesssary, and how you can improve.

Having a balanced diet is hugely important to any athlete. And that goes double for a teen. You need all the vitimins of the rainbow to grow and develop correctly. Eat Grains (breads) for fast energy, colorful fruits and veggies for the vitamins and minerals, and meat for the protein. Contrary to popular belief, slamming down protien shakes or this boost wont help you gain muscle mass. (Muscle mass is the bulking up I assume you are after, just for the record. I mention this because it is different from Muscle Density, which only comes from age.) To answer one of your questions directly, No, Protein the body does not use is not stored as fat, it is simply passed off as waste.

I want to take a break from general diet questions and talk about Calories. The importance of a calorie has been blown far out of proportion by the media in recent years. As a 16 year old male, you should Never count calories unless you are incredibly obese. If you are hungry, Eat something. The question you should ask yourself is what should i eat?. The answer is Fruit, grains, and Meat. Cut out the empty calorie items like sodas, candy, chocolates, ect. Another small tip, do not eat 3 large meals a day, but eat frequent smaller meals, every two to three hours. This will, in time, speed up the process of burning fat, and will help you process foods better. Also, without a large meal in your stomach, you can exercise more effectively. Now, back to general dietary tips.

You asked above Which vitamins are most important for energy. I say, all of them. Not being an expert Myself, i cant rattle off the names or leters of different compounds that when utilized by the body make you more energetic. However, i know that if you are eating an unbalanced diet, you will feel worse than eating a balanced one. So, eat healthy all around, and stop worrying about the specifics.

Rereading your posted question, i have noticed alot of very specific questions. The fact is, the answers really dont matter. If you are going to concentrate on your goal of bulking up, you need to focus your mind on training, and let the specifics fade away. at the age of 16, you know what foods are healthy, and which foods are unhealthy. It is up to your parents to supply you with the right food choics, but more importantly, it is up to your own Willpower to stay away from the bad ones.

So, Diet has been covered, if not in complete detail. if you need additional questions answered, email me, i’ll try to get back to you.

Now, on to the more interesting part, for me at least: Strength training. Training to increase overall muscle mass on your body. First, let me give you a short crash course on how muscles get stronger. Right now, before you read any more, get down and do as many pushups in a row as you physically can. Do pushups until you physically cannot push yourself up off the ground. Count them, remember that number, and when you are done, come back and continue reading.

Ok, so now your arms feel like jello, and you can barely lift the mouse. Do you know why? When you did all those pushups, especially with no type of warm up, your muscles worked so hard they developed tiny rips and tears all along them. These tears are why when you exercise hard, your muscles hurt afterward. They are also Critical to developing more muscle mass. Your body does not know you want larger arms or shoulders, and you cannot talk to it directly. What you have to do is demonstrate to your body that stronger muscles are needed. You demonstrate this by showing how easy it is to damage the muscle you have. When your body realised that the muscle in your arms is damaged, it will repair it and leave a mental note saying hmm… maybe we should make these muscles stronger in the future.

After you let your arms recover, usually 2 to three days WITHOUT working them, and then you do pushups until you cant physically do any more, your body again repairs them and adds another mental note to the list. Eventually, through repeated ripping and repairing, your body gets the message, and when it repairs them, it adds extra strands of muscle to reinforce the tissue. That is how your body grows more muscle mass.

A small note on Protein inta
