How old is too old to start an MMA career?

Ethan J asked:

I’m 22, and the way I have it figured right now, I’ll be ready to start fighting when I’m thirty. I’ll have my BJJ black belt by then, and I’ll have my finances straight, which will give me enough time to train a lot. Right now I have to focus on finishing school and getting a high paying job. What do you think? Is thirty too old? I don’t think it’s too old, but obviously I want to know what others think.

I’d say if you’re pushing 60 or 70, got a few marbles rolling around upstairs, can’t remember what your last name was, have a social security number of 1 and have to carry around a pee bag…you’re too old for MMA.

You’re already too old. To be successful, you need to get into the MMA competition phase by the time you’re 20. Any older than that and you will peak early and never see any real money.

Focus on getting a real job that pays well.

A couple months ago i watched a 35 year old rookie beat the hell out of some other guy…he was also a collegian wrestling champion tho…but honestly if u think about how old randy couture is and still dominating anything is possible as long as u take care of your body…hes also just a super human being

30s not too old but are you talking about fighting professionally at 30? or just starting to fight?

When you work a 9-5 sometimes you don’t want to go out on saturday and risk having your ligament torn or your clavicle broken. Your GF/wife/whatever might not be too supportive at that age either. But if you really want it, train like you mean it and just follow whereever the path takes you man. Thats half the fun.

I wonder if any of the people on this post who said you’re too old actually fight MMA. I doubt it. They’re probably just spectators, and spectators don’t count for shit when it comes to training. You sounds like an intelligent guy with a well thought out plan. Kudos to you. Thirty is not too old. Look at the ages of many of the popular MMA fighters right now. And because you’ve trained intelligently, you’ll have a big advantage over opponents who have not spent as much time planning their training.

You’ll be fine. Just make sure your good at what you do. 55 – 70 is over the limit in my opinion, but good luck! Hope to see you on UFC sometime soon! :)

It entirely depends on how good you are.

Statistically, you are probably too old to be banking on a career.

I say 30’s is too old to start. I know Randy Couture is in his 40’s but he is a rarity and he start much earlier than that.

You’re already too old. And why the hell would you wait 8 years, and wait past your prime, to start fighting? That makes absolutely no sense.

Honestly just finish school and get a nice high paying job. I know guys at my gym that are older and train every week just for fun, you could do that.

But a career in MMA is not going to happen for you, sorry.

I’m 24, been studying martial arts for a little over 10 years now, however only 2 months ago started training at a UFC sanctioned facility, so I’d say at 22 you’re looking pretty good age wise, but don’t wait too long… it will only hurt you more the longer you wait but you have a good 5 years before you have to worry too much about the age thing… I hope you’ve started you training… good luck.

I think too old to start your mma career would be around 40 or so, 30 is fine. Honestly it depends on how well you learn, and how dedicated you are.

There are some fighters who never wrestled in college or high school, but are better wrestlers because they never stopped learning. There are bjj grapplers who at brown belt can tap alot of black belts. It really depends on the quality training/coaching, making improvements, and being mentally ready.
